Kitchen Cabinets: Replace Or Refinish Them?
Your kitchen cabinets are looking bad. You would like to rip them out and just redo them completely. This is a costly project though. Determining whether you should refinish, reface or replace your kitchen cabinets is a hard task. You'll need to answer some key questions about them and then you'll need to determine your budget.
While replacing them is a great choice if you feel that is the best way to go, you'll find that you can improve the look of your kitchen cabinets without these drastic measures, in some cases.
What Are My Options?
Replacement: In replacing your kitchen cabinets, you will be completely pulling them down, repairing any damage to the drywall and then replacing them with brand new products. In this method, you can actually redesign them to fit your needs better, add more storage room or to give the kitchen a brand new look.
Re-facing: Re-facing the kitchen cabinets is your next choice. Here, you will likely be pulling out all parts of the cabinets that you want to and replacing just these items with new products.
For example, if you would like to replace the cabinet doors with glass cabinetry doors, you could do this. In many cases, you'll find a color match to make it easier. Or, you may need to refinish the complete project afterwards.
Refinishing: Refinishing the kitchen cabinets is a great way to bring back the luster to them. If the cabinets are in good working order, are not falling apart in other words, then refinishing them may be a great choice. You'll need to remove the current stain, clean and prep them and then re-stain them.
What To Ask Yourself
When it comes to redoing the kitchen cabinets in your home, there are several things you should think about before making a decision.
* What is the budget that you have for the kitchen cabinet work?
* Are the cabinets in solid shape? Are there missing parts, weak shelves, or broken doors?
* Can they be varnished or painted? Some of the cabinets will be so worn that re-varnishing will be much too difficult.
* Do they serve your needs accurately? Do you need more space, larger shelves or different types of drawers?
When exploring whether you should replace or just redo the kitchen cabinets in your home, examine all types of situations and determine what is the best overall choice for your needs.
